AUDI A4 B9 (Type 8W)
The B9 (type 8W) is the fifth generation of the medium class car Audi A4. The Audi A4 was presented officially towards the end of June 2015. In September 2015, the Audi A4 B9 was presented to the public at the Frankfurt Motor show and has been awarded in the same year with the Golden Steering Wheel award in the mid-size car class in Germany by BILD am Sonntag magazine.
For the first time in the history the A4 saloon and estate version (Avant) were presented in the same time. Delivery of the first models was made in October 2015.
The Audi A4 B9 is based on the advanced MLB platform "MLB Evo" made by the Volkswagen Group. The MLB platform is also used on the Audi Q7 that was presented in June 2015.
The Audi A4 B9-Series is currently manufactured at two production sites. While the sedan, the Avant and S models rolling off the line at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt, where as in Neckarsulm only the sedan will be built.
WHAT'S NEW ON THE AUDI A4 B9 COMPARED TO AUDI A4 B8?
The body of the fifth generation A4 received a lower and wider designed single-frame grille in the front bumper area. The lateral line begins with the hood, which extends to the outer edge of the fender. From the side, it is very similar to the B8 with exception to the side mirrors which are no longer mounted next to the front side windows. The tail ends with narrow taillights. In the lower outer portion of the rear bumper there are separate reflectors mounted.
The largest optical change received the interior, which is very much based on the available since June 2015 second generation Audi Q7. On the dashboard, depending on the equipment level, there is in-build 7- or 8.3-inch color screen, which is used to display the navigation and info data. The controls on the dashboard are arranged horizontally. Thus, the control unit for the air conditioning is located directly below the air vents. Below the climate control system, you have access via additional series of switches, the main vehicle functions and extras.
The Audi A4 B9 uses the latest generation Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface). Depending on the equipment the turn / push control also has a joystick and touchpad function. The position of the MMI terminal is dependent on the transmission variant. While the MMI control unit is for vehicles with automatic transmissions before the gear selector lever, it is positioned with the manual gearbox behind the shift lever.
The Audi A4 B9 has three new basic trim levels that are offered:
1) A4: The basic equipment includes 16-inch aluminum wheels and a multifunction steering wheel;
2) A4 Sport: The sporty equipment line includes a Multifunktions leather steering wheel, 17-inch aluminum wheels, sport seats and the high-gloss package.
A4 Design: The more upscale line includes a Multifunktion leather steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels, center console in leather.
All models are equipped with Keyless Go Entry system and is a speed limiter, which brakes the vehicle at the set maximum speed, as standard.
Also the vehicle is equipped with Xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights, halogen headlights are no longer offered. Optionally available LED or matrix-LED headlights to choose from. The latter permit by a variable light distribution is a glare-free high beam. In addition, the rear lights in LED headlights are also designed in LED technology. The Audi drive select driving dynamics control is standard in vehicles from 140 kW (190 hp). Additional equipment also includes adaptive chassis with electronic Continuous Damping Control is offered.
The dashboard as option, known from other Audi models can be equipped with the virtual cockpit available. Here, the analog instrument cluster on the driver's side by a 12.3-inch LCD display is replaced, in addition to indicating engine speed and speed, other vehicle parameters, media and navigation information. The camera-based security system can perform an autonomous emergency braking at speeds up to 40 km/h, if a collision is imminent. A brake warning and an impacting reducing braking intervention is carried out for speeds up to 85 km/h.
The new Adaptive Cruise Control is now working on models with automatic transmission from 0 to 250 km / h (manual transmission as previously at up to 30 km/h). With the Stop - & - Go function, the system can bring the vehicle to a stop automatically and start again. Also the Audi A4 B9 is equipped with "congestion assistant" of the system at congested traffic, independent steering, braking and acceleration of the vehicle. Using the navigation data and traffic sign recognition a "predictive efficiency assistant" is offered, through which the fuel consumption can be lowered on main roads by up to 10%, according to Audi. Other new features such as evasion, cornering, cross traffic assistant and exit warning provided by the lane change assistant (Side Assist) and Lane Departure Prevention (active lane assist). For the first time in the history of Audi A4 a head-up display and self-directing parking assistant is available.
Due to the increased use of hot-formed metal parts and aluminum components, the weight on the Audi A4 B9 could be reduced by up to 120 kg compared to its predecessor according to the manufacturer. In addition, the five-link front axle has been developed further and their weight reduced by 6 kg. Instead of a trapezoidal-link rear axle comes in the Audi A4 B9 a 5 kg lighter five-link rear axle for use. The electro-mechanical steering is a new development, and weighs with 3.5 kilograms less compared to its predecessor. The drag coefficient (Cw) is 0.23 (sedan) and 0.26 (Avant).
The petrol engines in the Audi A4 B9 offer for first time 1.4-liter turbo engine. The four-cylinder engine with gasoline direct injection produces 110 kW (150 hp) and is 21% more fuel efficient than the 1.8-liter turbo engine with 125 kW (170 hp) in the predecessor model. There is also a 2.0-liter petrol engine with cambelt, which should, however, be maintenance-free according to the manufacturer's instructions. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers in Audi A4 B9 a power of 140 kW (190 hp) and 185 kW (252 hp). Compared to its predecessor, the compression ratio of 9.7 was increased to 11.7: 1 in order to further reduce fuel consumption for natural gas (CNG) designed variant of the 2-liter engine with 125 kW (170 hp) which will appear with the A4 Avant G-Tron.
The 2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine which produces 110 kW (150 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp). As in the predecessor, this model is equipped by SCR catalytic converter and AdBlue additive, in order to meet the Euro-6 emissions standard. The AdBlue tank holds 12 liters (20.5 liters used to hold the predecessor). For an extra charge, a 24-litter tank is also available.
Another 2.0-liter TDI engine is going to be released with 90 kW (122 hp). The revised 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine was first with 200 kW (272 hp) and QUATTRO (four-wheel drive) available.
Another engine level with 160 kW (218 hp) and front-wheel drive appeared for launch in October 2015. In addition to a NOx catalytic converter and SCR diesel particulate filter, the V6 diesel engines is equipped with electrically adjustable turbocharger.
With the introduction of this generation of Audi A4 B9, the previous Multitronic continuously variable transmission is eliminated. Almost all engines except the 200 kW V6 diesel, have the option to be equipped with the seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox. In addition, a 6-speed manual transmission is offered, which has 16 kg lighter housing than the Audi A4 B8 due to being made of magnesium. The V6 TDI with 200 kW (272 hp) is equipped with a newly developed 8-speed torque converter automatic tiptronic gearbox.
Compared to its predecessor, the capacity of the fuel tank fell at the four-cylinder diesel engines with front wheel drive to 40 liters (about 20 litters less). For an extra charge, a 54-litter tank will be offered. Whereas for the petrol engines with front-wheel drive and the V6 TDI with 160 kW (218 hp) the 54 litters tank will be offered as standard. The tank on vehicles with all-wheel drive on the other hand holds 58 liters as standard.
Except for the 2.0 TFSI with 185 kW (252 hp), all four-cylinder engines are available with front-wheel drive as an "ultra" models.
In Euro NCAP crash test 2015 the Audi A4 B9 received the maximum rating of five stars. In detail, the vehicle reached 90% of the points for occupant protection, 87% for child safety and 75% for pedestrian protection.
